Six-spice beef
The dish that shows up in almost every review of this place. Charred hard, spiced dark, and served without ceremony.

01 — The place
Four things worth knowing before you make the drive out along the East Coast Road.

Mirabilis sits directly on Akkarai beach — a pale, angular pavilion whose upswept roof opens toward the Bay of Bengal. Nothing stands between the terrace and the water.
The lawn steps down through a free-form pool to the sand. By day it is a swimming club; by evening it becomes the room where the light happens.
Open decks for lunch, a shaded gallery of rattan and stone for the afternoon, and an emerald-and-brass bar indoors for everything that comes after.
After dark the wings are lit from beneath, the bar wall glows, and the building reads from the beach as a lantern.
02 — What is Mirabilis
Mirabilis is Latin for wondrous. It is also the name of a flower that opens at four in the afternoon and stays open all night.
Ours does much the same. The doors open at noon for people who want lunch with their feet almost in the sand. By late afternoon the terrace fills for the light. By nine the bar is the loudest room on this stretch of coast.
One address, three quite different places to be — which is the whole idea.

03 — One day, three rooms · 12:00
Long tables under the wing, the sea filling the whole window, and a kitchen that leans Mediterranean in the morning and Asian by the afternoon.

03 — One day, three rooms · 17:30
The sun goes down behind you and lands in the palms; the sea turns the colour of the glass in your hand. Nobody minds if you turn around to watch it.

03 — One day, three rooms · 21:00
Emerald tile, brass fans overhead, and the monogram lit behind the bottles. Late kitchen, long list, and a room that stays loud until close.

05 — The signatures

The dish that shows up in almost every review of this place. Charred hard, spiced dark, and served without ceremony.

Wrapped in shredded kataifi pastry and fried until the whole thing shatters. Order them before the sun goes down.

There are four seats on the north edge of the deck where the sea fills your entire field of view. Ask for them when you book.

The bar list runs six pages. The short version: something long and citric before sundown, something brown and stirred after it.
06 — The spaces

Open to the sky and the sea on three sides. Best table in the building between five and seven.
